Tracy M. Nelson was born September 1, 1937 in Bayard, Nebraska, to Oswald and Vida Nelson. He graduated from Bayard High School in 1955. He attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska until 1957, whereupon he finished his degree at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, in 1958. Nelson then worked for Nelson Brothers Construction Company in Bayard until 1959, when he transferred to the Home Glass Company in Lincoln. Nelson received instruction in architecture from the International Correspondence School from 1958-1962, after which he went to work as a draftsman for Robert L. Murphy, Architect, in North Platte.
Nelson worked as a draftsman for Eric Friss from 1967-1968, then returned to work for Murphy until 1969. Nelson became a Registered Professional Architect in Nebraska, on August 2nd, 1969. In 1970, he became a partner in Murphy-Nelson, Architects, at North Platte, where he worked until 1971. After the demise of the partnership Nelson worked for various companies until 1981, when he began his own practice in Bayard, Nebraska. By early in the twenty-first century he was working in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
