Walter Theodore Krausch was born in 1867 in Philadelphia to Theodore and Frederika Krausch, both of whom were German-born. His father was a civil engineer involved in eastern railroads. Before 1880 the family relocated to Evanston, Illinois and Walter was based in the Chicago area throughout his career.
