Summary

St. Benedict's Catholic Church is associated with Father Emmanuel Hartig, a missionary and Benedictine priest. Father Hartig, a native of Germany, served St. Benedict's for forty years and was responsible for the erection of six Catholic churches and the establishment of several parishes in southeastern Nebraska and northwestern Missouri. The church, located in Nebraska City, was built in 1861. It is a simplified version of the Romanesque Revival style and is believed to be the oldest brick Catholic churches in Nebraska.
