Lincoln, Nebraska, 1939-1953


George Unthank, Jr. was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 29, 1914. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nebraska in 1938, where he belonged to the Innocents Society. Unthank also earned his Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Engineering in 1939. The next year, Unthank married Maxine, and he went on to have three children. In 1940, he and his brother, John Oliver Unthank, first started their partnership together. George Jr. then served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 in the South Pacific. In 1946, Unthank and his brother became partners in their firm Unthank & Unthank.[8] Unthank also worked as an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska College of Architecture.

Unthank was a member of the Nebraska Architects Association, the American Institute of Architects, the Nebraska Alpha Tau Omega Alumni Association, and he served as President in 1953. He was also Treasurer of the Architects Association from 1951-1953, and President in 1954. Unthank served as chairman of the Professional Practice Committee and as director of the Nebraska chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute. In 1952, he was the agent of his class for the University of Nebraska Foundation. Unthank’s foreign travel consisted primarily of the British Isles, France, Belgium, Germany, and Holland.[2][3][4] Unthank died on October 17th, 1988, in Lincoln.[5][6][7]
