Ben H. Hughes was born circa 1898 in Seward, Nebraska. He graduated from Chicago Technical College. Hughes worked in carpentry under the guidance of his father from 1916-1918 until working as an architect. He started the Hughes Brothers manufacturing firm in 1921, where he worked until his death.

Hughes was married to Carrie, with whom he had three children: Jean, Lois, and Ben. He was president of Hughes Brothers, Inc., manufacturers of telephone and electric line cross arms and chairman of the Better Nebraska Association. He was also a member of the volunteer fire department, the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, the Knights Templar, the Elks, Seward Chamber of Commerce, and the Presbyterian Church. Hughes died in 1953.[3]
