'''Joseph Mapes''' was born on April 29, 1820 in Bedford, Pennsylvania to parents Hannah Holblock and Samuel Mapes.[[#References|[5]]] He worked as a carpenter in Michigan and in New York before moving to Nebraska to continue practicing his craft. Mapes first married Sarah Garn in 1845 and had seven children.[[#References|[5]]] Sarah died in 1868, and later in 1873 Mapes was married to Mary Randall, and they had two more children.[[#References|[1][2][3][4][5]]] Joseph Mapes died in Plattsmouth, Nebraska on April 2, 1905.[[#References|[5]]]
